2013 Show Report

Report by Chairman Ian Hartnell

IMG_3900I am very proud of what has been achieved by our great team of members and their wives despite the weather conditions on the day, I would like to thank each and every one of you for making such an effort to make the show such a success,

This year we are able to give Sidmouth Lifeboat a cheque for £600 we can do this because you the members went that extra mile, the ladies must have been thought they were baking for England!

Our new field layout for this year worked a dream thanks to our team of Marshalls, we had 75 cars booked in but about 15 never turned up for various reasons the weather being the main culprit how ever we had 19 cars not booked in arrive this gave us a total of 79 cars on display this being the largest number since we started our show back in 2011.

Every body I spoke to said they still enjoyed their day despite the rain our aim to create a nice friendly atmosphere proved successful yet again, I was told on Saturday we may not be the biggest but we are one of the best, I have had lots of emails saying how much they enjoyed their day with us it’s comments like these that make it all worthwhile.

This year we had Joe Kelly from the P4 Drivers Guild National committee with us. He said how much he had enjoyed our Devon hospitality, and we enjoyed Joe’s company this is the second time we have had a member of the committee visit us, we believe it is nice to be recognised as a branch and feel we must be going in the right direction.

IMG_3926This year we had an award for the best Rover in the show which was won by Graham Cook of East Budleigh with his Rover P4 100. The best car in show was won by Hugh Turner of Newton Poppleford with his MG Midget both cars were worthy winners these cars were selected by the other exhibitors who voted for them.

It was a really good year for cars ranging from Lily’s Mini (see photos) to Rolls Royces and such a selection in between, we had a lot of British sports cars this year in all their shapes and size’s, the standard of the cars just seems to improve every year.

This year we were without Roger and Linda Newton who have now retired we will always be grateful to them as they encouraged us in the early days, have a long and healthy retirement. however we know have Adrian and Pauline who have been really good to our club already not just for the show but ever since they have taken over, I hope we will have a long lasting relationship with them.

Classic car people are a really nice group of people who like to take their cars to charity shows and share their pride and passion with others which helps all sorts of good causes it says a lot about them we all love our cars irrespective of the marque we all share that passion, we like to have a natter and share our experiences (my wife says we are worse than woman).

Thanks to Tom Griffiths for bringing his toastrack and doing trips into Sidmouth it is always a poular part of our show , also thanks go to John for bringing his Routemaster bus this brings back so many memories for us older ones and a bit of a history lesson for the young ones.

IMG_3940Finally I would like to thank all the exhibitors for bringing their lovely cars without you there would be no show, you came from as far away as Harrogate yes in Yorkshire, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Northamptonshire, Hampshire and Gloucestershire.

The Rover P4 Drivers Guild (Devon) club looks forward to seeing you all next year, I have ordered the weather for next year it will be sunny!!
