Members Musings: BBC Air Ambulance Car Show

Words and Pictures by Ken Newton

Last Sunday,5th June,I left home about 10am and headed for The BBC Air Ambulance Appeal Car Show on Plymouth Hoe.
On my arrival I was escorted to my allotted spot with a magnificent view of Plymouth Sound. The weather was a bit doubtful but apart from a short shower it turned out to be a fine afternoon.
The show was tagged on to the truck show that was also there on the day.I would estimate around 150 vehicles attended on the day.
There was a wide variety of cars on parade ranging from vintage to modern classics, I was the only P4 on the day and I had a lot of interest in the old girl with people who’s grandfather had owned one or they new someone who owned one. Every time I attend a show I come away thinking how lucky I am to own my beloved P4.
While I was there I also met two members of Torbay Old Wheels and discussed entering their show in Paignton as a club. They said they would be pleased to have us there adding that we needed to get organised because places were very limited.
The organiser of the show for the BBC was radio presenter David(Fitz)Fitzgerald who has said he will give our show at Sidford a mention on his lunchtime show. Fitz runs an AC Cobra Which you can see in the pics. Former Top Gear and current Fifth Gear presenter Tiff Needell was there to judge the cars and awarded the best in show to an absolutely stunning grey Austin A35, strange I know, but well deserved.
I got a mention on my interior, but alas no award .We all recieved a screen sticker for attending which is proudly displayed in my rear windscreen.I left the show around 3pm and drove  home in my trusty old “auntie”.

  1. I was contacted earlier today by Ian Hartnell to see if i was interested in talking to a guy named Jamie. It transpired that a film is being made about mr brown and mr blair set in the late fifties and early sixties and they required a P4 Rover of that vintage Lo and behold the said Jamie contacted me asking if i could spare a couple of days with my Rover at various locations in the Southwest i obviously accepted his offer { solely to promote and widen the appeal of the P4 to the general public ] rest assured the personal appearance of yours truly in the film had no bearing on my immediate acceptance of Jamies offer ??????? So from the 30th of June until the 7th of July I shall be away on Location you can contact me through my agent or phone me direct
When i return from my travels I shall report on locations and give you the inside story as to what it feels like to film alongside a megastar namely THe Rover P4
